Oblivion Review: One Long, Slow Exposition

I had the Oblivion DVD for a while now, I just couldn’t spare the time of really watching it. Now when I saw the film and write the Oblivion review but wait a minute what exactly am I going to write about? Oblivion was a very confusing movie at least for me.

We are introduced to Jack (Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) at the beginning of the movie. Jack and Victoria consider themselves a "perfect team" (at least Victoria does) Jack is a technician and Victoria is in charge of communications. Their job is to keep the status quo in this apocalyptic environment but Jack is having strange dreams about things he shouldn’t remember mostly about a mysterious woman Julia (Olga Kurylenko). Things start changing for Jack when he refuses a direct order and attempts to rescue the survivors from a crashed ship which includes Julia. After Jack meets a group of survivors led by Beech (Morgan Freeman) things change completely and Jack understands that things are not exactly like they appeared to be.

Initially I was very excited to see Oblivion but after the first half an hour into the movie my hopes suffered a slow and painful blow. I was still hopeful, unfortunately only towards the end I figured out that this film was not what I was expecting it to be.
Like I mentioned the slow exposition should have given me a hint. The only problem was that the entire movie was one very long, slow exposition to a confusing plot. I was constantly waiting for things to heat up and make Oblivion go a lot smoother but that didn’t happen. I got the feeling that everything was just too slow and the end was somehow confusing and hard to understand. I know Tom Cruise likes making this sort of movies and I liked what he did in Vanilla Sky but for some reason it didn’t work for me in Oblivion.

In the last few years I see a lot of Olga Kurylenko in many Blockbuster films. She didn’t do anything special in Oblivion nor in any other recent films she appeared in. somehow she finds a way to take part in those big movies. I know that she has the looks but is that really enough? I’m not saying she is bad at what she does; she is not (because she doesn’t get to do a lot). Still I would like to know how she gets all those big parts.

To summarize Oblivion in this review I will say that I didn’t really suffer through it but it should have been a lot better than what we got. Oblivion is an OK movie. You can give it a try by getting the DVD but there is a 50/50 chance of you getting bored midway through because this Tom Cruise movie is not for everyone.
