Game Of Thrones Season 3 Episode 9 Review: The Rains of Castamere

Game Of Thrones s03e09 - The cut Thought Red Wedding

SPOILER ALERT

I don’t regularly review a single episode. Like you all know when I post a review it’s the review for the entire season, but I will make an exception this time. Why I make this exception you ask ... I will explain.

When I discovered that HBO planed to make a TV series based on the Song of ice and fire books. I wanted to see the Red Wedding with my own eyes. I waited for this episode ever since Game of Thrones aired on HBO. I read all five books (in a span of 6 month) that were released so far. The Red Wedding is the most powerful event that I have ever encountered during reading this amazing book series (or during reading any book series).

When I read the chapter with the Red Wedding I don’t know how to describe the feelings I had in that moment. J. R. R. Martin practically killed my spirit on that spot right there. The moment I finished the chapter I felt empty, like I was paralyzed and it’s not only that I couldn’t move. I didn’t want to do anything. I found myself in a weird state where I was starring at a blank wall of the train on my way to work. I was in that shock state for about 5 - 10 minutes and I was trying to figure out "What the hell am I supposed to do now, that just didn’t happened”. No way how do I suppose to go on? J. R. R. Martin took all my hopes and crashed them with one swift strike of a knife. After that I couldn’t continue reading the book for a few days. Frankly I was absorbing the raw events that entire time.

Now when the episode aired and everybody got to see what I read and felt years ago, I can compare the emotional impact that the Red Wedding had. This was no doubt the most eventful episode of the 3rd season weather the scenes with Jon Snow, his escape from the wildings and the fact that Bran discovered his real potential with his powers during his assist to John Snow. I even enjoyed the Daenerys scenes something i rarely enjoy.I liked the interaction between Arya and Sandor Clegane, and how the director emphasized the fact that Arya came so close to see it all slip beneath her feat.

What can I say about the Red wedding, maybe it wasn’t as powerful as it was in the Storm of swords but that is probably because I knew what was going to happen. Still the Red Wedding scene popped my blood again and I was on my toes the entire time. How can I sum up the Red Wedding. It was cut thought for sure but most of all it was very painful event to see. Rob’s death was a painful thing to see.

What was even more hart breaking was seeing Rob’s wolf Grey wind get killed by an army of coward Frey archers, Arya’s presence during Grey wind’s execution was hard to take and even seeing Catelyn going out in style was hard to bare. On the other hand I didn't care much for Talisa and I understood that the producers needed to get rid of her. Unfortunately this will close the door on few twists from the book, I guess i will have to live with that.

Next week the final episode of the season will air but the raw wounds that the viewers received in Episode 9 will still be fresh. Even after this season of Game of thrones will end people will be still talking about the cut thought events we witnessed in episode 9.

  1. Speaking as someone who has yet to read the books... but has inadvertently spoiled myself (due to many people posting spoilers in comment sections.) I would like to say thanks for the reviews you made of this great show. Ive read both this one and the season review. I would highly recommend next season you do episode reviews.
